As the leaves start to brown and the air begins to chill, the autumn season brings forth a wide selection of fruits and vegetables.<\/p>\n

But with an estimated 7.1 million Britons wrongly storing their food, roughly 281,000 tonnes of fruit and vegetables are discarded every year, with most being thrown away during the colder months.\u00a0<\/p>\n

With this in mind and the cooler temperatures fast settling in, Vlatka Lake, storage expert at self-storage operator Space Station, has shared some advice on how to store six autumn fruits and vegetables.\u00a0<\/p>\n

1. Potatoes\u00a0<\/h3>\n

Potatoes are a staple amongst British dinners. Whether they are homegrown or purchased from the supermarket, they need to be stored properly or households risk them sprouting, going soft – or worse, mouldy.<\/p>\n

According to Vlatka Lake, potatoes keep for \u201cthe longest\u201d when stored in a cool, dry, dark place as exposure to moisture and light can \u201ccause rotting\u201d.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

The same goes for other root vegetables such as carrots and turnips. The expert claimed: \u201cStoring them this way ensures they\u2019ll be good for weeks, or possibly all winter long.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

Unlike many other vegetables, they also need to be well-ventilated so avoid any airtight containers.<\/p>\n

2. Spinach and Kale<\/h3>\n

To \u201cproperly\u201d store spinach and kale, wash them, and wrap it in a paper towel to soak up any excess water as this will cause \u201cpremature mould\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vlatka warned: \u201cIf your spinach is not in an airtight container, you must make sure you don’t store it adjacent or near to ethylene-producing fruits and veg such as your broccoli and sprouts, as exposure to this gas will speed up the decaying process.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

3. Brussel sprouts\u00a0<\/h3>\n

When storing individual sprouts, households can store them in the bag they bought them in or place them in a bowl covered with cling film.<\/p>\n

Simply add some holes first for ventilation and put them in the fridge drawer. The expert warned: \u201cBrussels sprouts produce a small percentage of ethylene and are super sensitive to the effects of it.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWhen exposed, they will start to yellow and rot so this makes it all the more important to keep them contained within the fridge.\u201d<\/p>\n

4. Broccoli<\/h3>\n

Similarly to Brussel sprouts, broccoli also \u201cemits and is extra sensitive to ethylene\u201d, so to help them \u201clast longer\u201d, wrap them tightly in foil and place them in the fridge. Vlatka claimed: \u201cThe tin foil will help keep it fresh for up to a month.\u201d<\/p>\n

5. Onions, garlic and shallots<\/h3>\n

These types of produce should be stored\u202fin a cool, dry and well-ventilated place out of direct sunlight as moisture, light and lack of circulating air may lead to \u201cmould and sprouting\u201d.\u00a0<\/p>\n

As with potatoes, many people choose to store them in their garage, as it\u2019s cooler. The expert claimed: \u201cIf stored correctly, a whole head of garlic could last for up to half a year, however, once you break apart the cloves, their shelf life drastically decreases, typically lasting from two to three weeks.\u201d<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

6. Pumpkin\u00a0<\/h3>\n

With pumpkin season nearly here and an estimated 13 million pumpkins predicted to go to waste around Halloween time in the UK, knowing how to store them is more important than ever.\u00a0<\/p>\n

To store a whole pumpkin, keep it in a cool, dry place with good ventilation, like a pantry or the garage. To keep them \u201cfresh for longer\u201d, store them upside down to help them retain their shape and prevent rotting and place them on top of something like some cardboard to eliminate contact with the floor.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Also, make sure they’re not touching any other produce. Vlatka claimed: \u201cStored this way, pumpkins can last up to three to four months.\u201d<\/p>\n
