Classic baked apple recipes usually contain nuts, brown sugar, toffee and other sweet ingredients – all of which can make them quite unhealthy.

But simply swapping the filling for fruit and granola is an easy way to make them much more nutritious.

Dr Megan Rossi, founder of Bio&Me and The Gut Health Doctor has the easiest method for a quick and filling breakfast.

Using a combination of just two ingredients – fruit and granola, these baked apples are naturally sweet without any added sugar.

What’s more, they can be made in just 30 minutes for a tasty, warm breakfast.

More info

The ingredients are not only easy to find in supermarkets, but affordable too. In Morrisons for example, 1kg of granola costs £2.39, 1kg of frozen berries costs £2.99, and a pack of Bramley apples is just £1.99.

They’re all easy to store for weeks or months at a time, so the recipe is a great option for when there’s little in the fridge.

Of course, the apples do need to be cooked in the oven, so start by preheating the appliance to 170C.

Then, prepare the apples by cutting the top off of each one and scoring all the way around the diameter of each apple.

Using a spoon, scoop out a hollow in each apple ready to stuff with the crunchy filling. This should be around two inches in and across about the same, though “plenty of apple” should still be left in there, according to Dr Megan.

Next, combine the berries, granola, one teaspoon of cinnamon and oil in a small bowl. Mix well then divide the stuffing between each apple and place in a baking dish.

Megan said: “It’s ok to top the apples with the stuffing as well as sprinkle any left around the apples.”

Bake in the oven for 30 minutes, then remove from the oven and leave to cool a little before serving with yoghurt or crème fraiche.

Ingredients
