Weight loss goals can be reached by exercising regularly and the health expert shared some of the best workouts to do. These help boost the metabolism which can lead to fat loss.

What exercises are best?

Dr Mosley stated mixing cardio exercises with strength training has been shown to promote weight loss.

He said: “Many studies have shown the beneficial effects of combining high intensity aerobic exercise (like HIIT) with resistance training.

“The theory behind this is that these two forms of exercise together create the best environment to maximise fat loss while maintaining muscle mass, which is essential for a strong and healthy life beyond the weight loss journey.”

Cardio workouts can help burn calories whereas strength training can ensure slimmers lose fat and not muscle.

He continued: “Weight loss that is induced purely by calorie restrictions has been shown to lead to a reduction in lean muscle mass.

“At around age 30 we start losing as much as five percent of lean muscle mass per year thanks to ageing, but your rate of muscle wastage is significantly reduced with resistance training.

“This strength-based training will help maintain and increase your muscle mass and ensure that you are losing fat without compromising muscle.”

There are lots of different workout plans people can follow, depending on what is accessible for them and what they enjoy.

Moving in anyway has benefits but Dr Mosley recommended strength training is also one of the best workouts for boosting the metabolism.

When the metabolism is spiked, the body will burn more calories.

The expert added: “Exercise science researchers suspect strength training is helpful for weight loss because it helps increase your resting metabolism (the rate at which your body burns calories when you’re just going about your day, outside of exercising).

“It’s the gift that keeps on giving.”

When is the best time to workout?

The time of day dieters choose to exercise could have a huge impact on the results.

Those looking to burn more fat could benefit from getting a session in first thing before breakfast.

However, slimmers could perform better by working out later in the day.

“There are advantages to exercising first thing in the morning, but there are also advantages to exercising later in the day,” Dr Mosley explained.

“There is evidence, for example, that exercising before breakfast (i.e. in a fasted state) leads to more fat burning, but if you are interested in performance, then late afternoon or early evening may be a better time to work out.

“You might like to complete your HIIT sessions in the mornings after fasting, to reap the benefits of fasted cardio, and schedule your resistance training in the afternoon when your muscles are warmer and more revved up, allowing you to work at a higher intensity.

“Really, the best time to exercise is the time of day you are most likely to consistently complete your workout.

“So if you are good at talking yourself out of exercise, perhaps a morning session will be better suited.”
