The colour, size and shape of a plate all play a role in how your food tastes and how much you eat. If you’re hoping to lose weight, switching up your dishes could really make a difference. Express.co.uk chatted to the founders of Peyton & Tyler, an online, premium homewares outlet, to find out what sort of plate you should eat off to help you lose weight.

The flavour of your food is determined by the dish’s ingredients, but did you know that the plate itself can affect how you think the food tastes?

Peyton and Tyler said: “According to research and countless experts, the plate you choose can actually have an incredibly powerful effect on the taste of your meal.

“Yes, the colour and shape of a plate can make us believe that food tastes sweeter, more savoury, more intense and, in some instances, can influence the amount that you eat.”

Understand how your plate’s colour, size and shape affect your satisfaction and taste buds could be the key to losing weight.

Why eating from a red plate will help you avoid overeating

Plenty of research states that red plates encourage you to eat less, so this is the plate to go for if you’re trying to lose a few pounds.

Peyton and Tyler’s experts said: “As we associate red with danger, these plates are seemingly a food deterrent… if you’re a foodie who really wants to indulge, they shouldn’t lie at the top of your wish list!

“The effects of plates on our food are subtle but they certainly exist. Choosing the perfect plate depends on what you’re cooking, what flavours you want to enhance and what you’re in the mood for.

“Therefore, it’s useful to have a wonderful variety of plates at your fingertips! That way, no matter what you’re creating in the kitchen, you can ensure it tastes the best it possibly can. Plus, your kitchen will look more creative and contemporary than ever.”

If weight loss isn’t your goal and you’re more focussed on enhancing the flavours of your food, you should stick to black or white plates.

The experts said: “If you’re a fan of culinary TV shows (including MasterChef, for example), then it’s quite likely that you’ve stumbled across quirky black plates.”

“In stark contrast to traditionally white, rounded plates, these modern alternatives promise to make any meal pop!”

Not only are black plates trendy, they will make your food feel more luxurious and intensify savoury flavours, apparently.

“Black plates have also been found to enhance complex judgements with regards to food (more specifically, quality and liking), whilst they’re thought to enhance savoury flavours specifically.”

Overall, black plates make our savoury food more satisfying, whilst convincing our subconscious that they’re more luxurious.

White plates are the most common choice for Brits, with pretty much all of us opting for round, white plates for every meal.

The experts noted: “They’re commonplace staples and rarely do we consider how they’re subtly changing the flavours of our favourite foods.”

However, these iconic plates have been found to strengthen sweet flavours, alongside the intensity of our foods.

They added: “As a result, they’re a wonderful choice for desserts or main meals with subtle flavours that you’d really like to intensify.”
