How to Lose a Stone in a Month: Dr Amir explains paleo diet

The Paleo diet also known as the Palaeolithic diet is a simple eating plan that can help a slimmer lose weight fast. It advises dieters to avoid all forms of sugar, soft drinks, grains, most dairy products, legumes as well as vegetable oils and margarine.

Dr Amir Khan and Ruth Langsford were on hand to offer weight loss advice to the four participants of the show who struggled following a healthy lifestyle.

The show consisted of testing and trying different diets, one of which was the Paleo diet.

According to Healthline, following a whole food-based diet can help shift the pounds and reduce diabetes and heart disease.

It is also thought that the diet can be followed without calorie counting because all the foods encouraged on the diet are typically low in calories.

On the Channel 5 show, Dr Amir Khan guided one unhealthy eater towards the Paleo diet.

The doctor said: “I’m going to put you on a diet that our ancestors used to live off.

“It’s called the Paleo diet. If they did it way before food was mass produced you can eat it now.”

The presenter of the show, Ruth Langsford explained what the Paleo diet will entail for the food lover Andy.

She said: “The Paleo diet Andy will be filing up on lots of eggs with omelettes and frittata for breakfast, soups and salad for lunch, grilled meat or fish with veg for dinner and fruit and yoghurt for desert.”

Dr Amir Khan added: “This means everything he eats will be natural, lean and clean, his snacks will become dried fruit and nuts and he will have to swap his fatty kebabs for lean meat and fish.”

The only way to lose weight however, is through a calorie deficit.

This means that the body is burning more calories than it is consuming and the only way to do this is through exercising more and eating less.

The doctor explained that although beer is usually permitted on the diet, he won’t be allowing it for the participant because he wants him to lose as much weight as possible.

Healthline states that alcohol is often ‘empty’ calories meaning that they provide the body with little nutrients but are high in calories.

There are almost 155 calories in one 12-ounce can of beer and in comparison, this is the same amount of calories as what an evening snack should be.

Consuming a huge amount of beer could also result in putting on a large amount of fat around the belly area.

Healthline explained: “Food high in simple sugars, such as those found in candy, sofa, and even beer, are also high in calories. Extra calories end up stored as fat in the body.

“Consuming foods and drinks high in sugar can quickly lead to weight gain.

“We can’t choose where all that extra weight ends up. But the body tends to accumulate fat in the abdominal area.”

Dark chocolate which is 70 percent cocoa or higher is also allowed on the diet because quality dark chocolate is very nutritious.

There are also now several different versions of the paleo diet and many of them allow some modern foods that science suggest are healthy.

According to Healthline this includes grass-fed butter and even some gluten-free grains like rice.
