Fern Britton has been known for her presenting roles throughout her career including her co-hosting role on ITV’s This Morning with Philip Schofield. Since being replaced by Holly Willoughby, Fern has slimmed down drastically by changing her diet.

The star, who dropped from a size 22 to a size 12 in under two years switched up her lifestyle after she took the decision to undergo a gastric band operation in 2006.

A gastric band is used by those who need to lose a lot of weight as it reduces the amount of food the stomach can hold.

It is placed around the stomach, creating a small pouch towards the top and it takes less food to fill the pouch, subsequently meaning less calories are consumed throughout the day.

This can massively help with weight loss.

The 63-year-old has spoken openly about her operation in the past, including the benefits of healthy eating and exercise.

She told the Daily Mail: “I was cycling like mad and nothing was happening. My GP said I was a good candidate for a band, so I went ahead.

“I needed to get healthy. I wasn’t unhappy the way I was; I was unhealthy. I’d been recovering from having children, having a divorce, all those emotional things.”

Fern also added that her cholesterol was high and her knee joints were starting to hurt which made her realise she needed to change her lifestyle and eating habits.

She explained that eating had been a self-comfort for her throughout tough moments in her life, meaning she ended up putting on a lot of weight.

As well as getting her gastric band fitted, the star also followed a gluten free diet when losing weight, as well as cutting back on carbohydrates.

Her former husband, Phil Vickery previously explained: “Fern has cut right back on carbohydrates and eats a really healthy diet now with loads of vegetables and fruit.

“She likes my cooking. Family meals are old-fashioned favourites, like cottage pie or chicken with lots of veg and salad.”

Low carbohydrate diets can be very effective for weight loss, according to research.

Reducing carbs can help to reduce appetite, which means slimmers are likely to eat less calories throughout the day.

In order to lose weight you must be in a calorie deficit, which means burning more calories than consuming.

Healthline explained that for many people eating a low carb diet, counting calories may not be necessarily.

It added: “For some people, a low carb diet allows them to eat until fullness, feel satisfied and still lose weight.”

Another presenter who has lost a lot of weight in recent years is Lorraine Kelly.

Lorraine claimed to use her own fitness DVDs to lose weight as she explained focusing on being active rather than dieting helped her to shed the pounds.

She previously spoke about her weight loss and said: “I really look forward to my classes, and with the new DVD we wanted to show what a class was like.

“It’s great going to keep fit but mentally it also makes me feel better.”
