There has long been a big debate about whether breakfast is the “most important meal of the day”, with many for and against the statement. Some people also decide to skip the first meal of the day for various reasons, such as not feeling hungry, not having the time or looking to lose weight.
But a doctor has revealed that this could be detrimental to people’s health.
So instead of skipping the meal, people should eat specific foods that promote shedding pounds.
Dr Richard Allison, a nutritionist at Herbalife Nutrition and Head of Performance Nutrition at Tottenham Hotspur’s Women’s team, said: “Breakfast is your body’s first opportunity to refuel after eight to nine hours of fasting while asleep.
“You need to replenish the glycogen stores that supply your body and muscles with energy.”
He continued: “Skipping breakfast often could lead to a reduction of physical activity as your body would be lacking the necessary energy supplies to exercise and move efficiently.”
But he noted it all depends on a person’s lifestyle and when they would eat their first meal.
If a person tends to work out first thing in the morning they might not have their first meal of the day until 10am or after.
Dr Allison added: “It is important to adapt your intake to your personal needs, whether this is training, work or other aspects of your lifestyle.”

According to WebMD, eating breakfast can help kick-start a person’s metabolism by helping them burn calories throughout the day.
Many studies have linked eating breakfast to good health, including better memory and concentration, lower levels of LDL cholesterol, and lower chances of getting diabetes, heart disease and being overweight.
While there are numerous trials that found eating breakfast might not help with weight loss Sharon Zarabi, a registered dietitian and bariatric program director at Lenox Hill Hospital, revealed: “It’s not the breakfast, it’s what we’re eating for breakfast.”
“Breakfasts rich in fibre, protein, and healthy fats can help people feel full for longer, compared to meals high in refined carbohydrates.”
So for a person wanting to lose weight, consuming the wrong foods can increase cravings and set them up for failure before the day begins.
But by eating the right foods, people can keep themselves full until lunchtime and minimise the need to snack.
Eggs are rich in protein and have been shown to increase fullness, reduce food intake later in the day and enhance weight loss.
This fruit is high in fibre, which helps keep people feeling fuller longer. Unripe bananas also contain resistant starch, which may help decrease food intake and belly fat.
Yoghurt is high in protein and has been associated with decreased hunger and food intake, plus a lower risk of weight gain.
There are various berries that are nutrient-dense and high in fibre. Studies show that eating them may also decrease calorie intake and aid weight loss.
Oats are a breakfast favourite for many as they are low in calories but high in fibre and protein, which may help increase weight loss.
They also contain beta-glucan, which can decrease both blood sugar and appetite.
