Pepsi and Star Athletes Partner to Help Fight Food Insecurity

At no time in recent American history has widespread food insecurity been such a serious, nationwide issue. It’s difficult for kids who rely on meals at schools to get by even under normal circumstances, and the widespread closure of school districts has left far, far too many families scrambling to figure out where their next meal is coming from.

While city and state governments across the country have stepped up to fill the gap, no amount of help is too much when it comes to keeping families fed. As part of that effort, Pepsi and some star athletes are teaming up to help No Kid Hungry marshal the resources it needs to fulfill its mission.

Dubbed “Give Meals, Give Hope,” the promotion finds athletes (including some with plenty of fans in the epicenter of America’s current COVID-19 outbreak) like New York Giants running Back Saquon Barkley, Yankees outfielder Aaron Judge, and WNBA All-Star A’Ja Wilson partnering with Pepsi to push their communities to make donations to what registers as a very worthy cause in a moment like this.

As Judge notes in his posts, Pepsi will match up to one million dollar’s worth of donations between now and the end of April. That’s similar to a donation-matching effort Popeyes initiated in partnership with No Kid Hunger back at the end of March.

The hope is that leveraging superstar athletes representing a community ravaged by COVID-19 will help spur generous donations.

“We’re thankful for partners like PepsiCo who are leveraging their capabilities and assets — like a roster of star athletes — to help get the word out and ensure all kids have access to nutritious food during this challenging time and beyond,” Jill Davis, Chief Revenue Officer for No Kid Hungry, said in a press release announcing the partnership.

Thankfully, Pepsi isn’t planning to just chip in $1 million. The company says it’s pledged $45 million to combat COVID-19 worldwide, with an overall goal of distributing more than 50 million meals through food banks and other partners, including No Kid Hungry.
