Last week, the Kardashian-Jenner family was publicly dragged after revealing they celebrated Kim Kardashian’s 40th birthday party on a private island. Now, Kendall Jenner is under fire after photos from her Halloween-themed birthday party made rounds on the internet, and a clip of her blowing out birthday candles while a masked server holds the cake is striking a particular chord.

The screen recording that was clipped and ultimately went viral came from Kylie Jenner’s now-deleted Instagram Story; in them, a server is holding up her cake while wearing a mask, and he is seemingly the only person in the frame wearing some sort of protective face covering. In the clip, it also appears the server tried to lean back as Kendall blows out the candles, presumably to protect himself.
“Ok Kendall Jenner blowing out candles as a masked waiter holds her cake and tries to move out of the way was actually the scariest thing I saw on Halloween,” a tweet showing the video said. The post now has over 6,000 retweets and 41,000 likes and counting.
The ongoing pandemic has made large gatherings such as this birthday party a point of contention. Due to safety concerns related to COVID-19, the CDC maintains its stance that gatherings should be held outdoors when possible with six feet of social distancing encouraged. In photos like the ones posted by attendees like Kylie Jenner and Kim Kardashian, it’s clear that social distancing was not being followed.

While it has been determined contracting the virus through food is unlikely, it is known that COVID-19 is spread through respiratory droplets when an infected person coughs, sneezes, or talks. Blowing out candles on a birthday cake could lead to such respiratory droplets to fall onto the cake that is then served out to guests. This concern has even lead to the creation of a “cake shield,” a device that allows people to blow out birthday candles without exposing the cake to potential germs.
Other photos from Kendall’s party show that there were signs posted around the venue telling guests to “take all the photos you want, but please do not post on social media of any kind.” Still, photos from the event have gone viral and some celebrities, like Miley Cyrus, have started to unfollow people who attended the party as an apparent sign of disapproval. Kendall Jenner has not yet addressed the backlash on social media.
