Alcohol has a way of making questionable purchases seem like solid investments.
When I’m of sound mind and body, of course I do not want to buy a red- and white-striped hot tub with Colonel Sanders’ face on it. But get few drinks in me, and I’m on the phone with KFC corporate and digging a hole in my backyard.
According to a new study from Finder.com, I’m not the only one who gets a little credit card-happy after a night of drinking.
The researchers polled 2,100 people on their drunken spending habits, and this is what they found:
- 26 percent of Americans admit to shopping under the influence, totaling some 53.4 million people.
- Americans spent $39.4 billion on drunk purchases in 2018. In 2017, the total was $30.43 billion.
- More than half (52 percent) of that $39.4 billion went to food. 58 percent of women said they’d bought a meal after a drink, while 49 percent of men admitted to ordering a bite while under the influence.
- Apparently drunken shopping is the one thing millennials aren’t killing—despite being the generation that consumed the least amount of alcohol last year, millennials spent far more money than Gen X and Baby Boomers after drinking.
It’s not clear exactly what kinds of food the drunk Americans purchased, but we’re betting Taco Bell had a very good year.
