Food boxes launched by supermarkets at the beginning of the lockdown have been a lifeline for many shoppers who can’t get out to their local stores. Though initially the shops were offering boxes of essential groceries, popularity has soared as brands have introduced new versions including takeaway-style foods and barbecue selections for home delivery. Marks and Spencer has added a new option to its range this week, and it’s sure to be a hit among dieters.

Supermarkets have been gradually expanding the food boxes available for delivery in recent weeks, keeping the nation fed with everything from fresh fruit and seasonal vegetables to gluten-free options.
Marks and Spencer has launched its tenth food box this week, with a new Count On Us selection.
The £30 box contains eight low-calorie ready meals which each serve one person – making them £3.75 per dish.
The Count On Us range is the store’s low-fat brand, offering healthier and balanced meals with a lower calorie content for those who are watching their weight.
Every meal in the box is under 400 calories, making them ideal for anyone who is trying to lose weight or track their calorie intake.
In general the recommended daily calorie intake is 2,000 calories a day for women, and 2,500 for men.
However, to lose weight you need to create a calorie deficit – eating fewer calories than you burn through exercise.
But calorie counting can be tricky when it comes to home cooking, as it also requires portion control and a bit of maths to add up every element of a meal.

The M&S Count on Us range takes out the guesswork and offers complete meals with a low calorie content.
The convenient options can be delivered direct to your door for £4.99, on a day of your choice.
The light dishes can go straight into the fridge, or can be frozen if you want to save them for later, making meal planning that little bit easier.
It could also be a good option for those who have less time to cook, with the meals taking as little as four minutes to heat up in the microwave.

Sausages & colcannon mash with onion gravy, carrots and peas (400g)
Chicken mini fillets in gravy with buttery mash, carrots and peas (400g)

The new addition joins the rest of the Marks and Spencer food box range, which are priced from £20 to £40.
The cheapest options are the Seasonal Fruit and Seasonal Vegetables boxes, which are both just £20 for a selection of fresh food.
However, there are limits for customers wanting to order the boxes, with just two of each type allowed per customer.
The delivery options were initially created for those who were shielding or more vulnerable and therefore unable to head out to the shops to pick up essential items.
However, they’ve been so popular that customers are hoping that the service will continue even when the lockdown is over.
“Absolutely thrilled with this box of veggies,” one user wrote on the website. “An excellent selection all very fresh and nicely chilled, so much better than most of the ones we try from other online delivery services, and with good sell-by dates too. I really hope Marks & Spencer’s do not stop providing these excellent boxes once lockdown completely eases.”
