Although Pumpkin pie is a traditional food in Halloween festivities, it can be quite complicated to make and put together.

Opting for an “easy” recipe such as some “spooky” cookies will help to keep the kids entertained.

The cookie recipe states: “Get the kids excited for Halloween with these spooky bat and spider cookies.

“Completely with squashed flies made from chocolate chips, they’ll be a big hit.”

The recipe will take under an hour from start to finish and should make around 20 cookies.

For the cookie:

150g butter, softened

50g caster sugar

100g light brown sugar

One tsp vanilla extract

One large egg

250g plain flour

1/2 tsp baking powder

100g milk or dark chocolate chips

To decorate:

60g dark chocolate, melted

60g royal icing sugar, mixed with two tsp water

20 Maltesers

Five cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookies

10 caramel-filled chocolates

Start by preheating the oven to 180C or 160C Fan and lining two baking sheets with parchment paper.

Beat the butter and sugars together with an electric whisk before adding the vanilla and egg and mixing again.

Slowly stir in the flour and baking powder with a wooden spoon until you have a dough, then fold in the chocolate chips.

Divide the dough into 10 equal pieces and roll into balls before arranging them on the baking sheet, making sure they are spread out.

Press the tops of the cookies down very slightly using the bottom of a glass and bake for 10 to 12 minutes, until golden around the edges.

To make the spider cookies, lay 10 of the cooled cookies out and spoon the melted chocolate into a piping bag, with the royal icing in another.

Pipe a dot of the icing onto the back of two Maltesers and arrange these onto the cookie to create the head and body of a spider.

Repeat with the remaining cookies and then pipe eight spider legs around the bodies using the chocolate. Next, pipe two small dots of royal icing onto the heads to create eyes, and pipe very small dots of chocolate over the eyes to create pupils.

To make the bat cookies, lay out the other 10 biscuits and separate the cream-filled chocolate sandwich cookies, carefully scraping the cream off the cookie.

Cut the cookie pieces into semicircles using a knife and stick caramel-filled chocolate onto the middle of each cooled cookie using the royal icing.

The recipe said to use a little more to stick a chocolate cookie semicircle on either side of the chocolates to make the bat wings.

Pipe on some eyes using the royal icing and melted chocolate and you’ll have 20 tasty Halloween treats.
