Iceland is aiming to reduce its food waste by launching a brand new scheme that will allow shoppers to get free food through online delivery. Available now, discover more information about the scheme and how to redeem it here.
Iceland has just launched the Free On the Last Day of Life scheme which will allow shoppers to get free food.
The launch of the scheme comes as Iceland aims to reduce its food waste and customers will be able to get free food on the last day of shelf life and when no other stock is available.
This scheme is available to online shoppers only and traditionally delivered food has a shelf life of two days.
Following a successful trial in 40 stores with more than 17,000 items given away for free, the scheme is now available in all Iceland stores in the UK.
According to the supermarket, customers received an average refund of £1.58 per order.
The supermarket is expecting that the new initiative will provide customers with more than 1.3 million items per year, which is equivalent to over £500,000 in retail value.
Richard Walker, Managing Director at Iceland Foods, said: “Reducing food waste is a huge priority for us as we continue to reduce our impact on the environment.”
He added: “We know that shelf life plays a big role in the creation of surplus food so we to have find an innovative way to combat this within our stores and via our online shopping.”
It is simple for shoppers to redeem the free food and there is no additional steps.
Simply place an order online at Iceland and if the product only has same day delivery and date, it will be scanned and labelled.
It will then be placed in the customer’s shopping bag as normal.
Shoppers will be made aware of the free item ahead of delivery and not charged the same price.
In addition, all chilled, fresh, cakes, bread and morning goods will be included in the scheme.
