Iced coffee is a delicious alternative to a warm cup as the weather hots up. Not only does it wake you up thanks to its caffeine contents, but the coldness will give you an extra boost to kickstart your day. Iced coffees are popular in coffee shops as they have espresso machines readily available, but you may not think you can make it at home using just your good old instant coffee, sugar, water and milk. So simple yet so delicious and refreshing when heatwave temperatures call for beverages like it.

What coffee should I use?

Instant coffee is all you need to make this iced coffee recipe.

The brand doesn’t need to be anything fancy and whatever you have in your kitchen cupboard will do.

If you have a favourite brand then, of course, feel free to use that one.

This recipe won’t work with ground coffee beans, so they can’t be used as a substitute for instant.

While you may think only hot water can make instant coffee, you may be surprised to know it works just as well with cold water.

If you don’t have a blender, you can also whisk by hand using a mini milk frother or whisk.

This recipe is great to make at home as it omits much of the unhealthy ingredients used in coffee shops and restaurants.

In addition, you can determine the sugar levels yourself and opt for different ingredients to tailor the recipe to you.

How to make iced coffee with instant coffee


Milk, 250ml (one cup)
Water, 125ml (half-a-cup)
Ice cubes, one cup full and extra for serving if you like
Instant coffee, two to three teaspoons
Brown sugar, two to there teaspoons

You will also need a blender or stick blender to make this recipe.

Throw all the ingredients together in a blender or stick blender beaker.

Blend until completely smooth and you can see a foam forming at the top.

If you’re after coffee with a thicker foam then you can achieve this by blending it for longer.

Put some ice cubes into glasses before pouring the coffee in and serve straight away.


This iced coffee uses full-fat milk, but you can skimmed or semi-skimmed if you’d prefer.

You can also opt for non-dairy milk alternatives, such as almond milk if you prefer not to ingest animal products.

Instead of brown sugar, you can use white sugar or another sweetener of your choice.

This recipe will also work well with sugar syrups, and you can use different flavourings such as caramel to recreate coffee shop favourites.
