Roast potatoes came top of the poll, with 63 percent rating them as the best item on the dinner plate. The crispy-yet-fluffy spud beat the iconic turkey to top spot, with double-pork delight, the pig in blanket making up the top three.
And the importance of a good gravy cannot be underestimated, as it came in fourth place with 43 percent of the vote.
A spokesman from Morphy Richards, which commissioned the research, said: “We are certainly surprised to see Brussel sprouts score so highly in our latest research, but it’s great to see some staple Christmas vegetables making the top 10.
“Christmas dinner is one of the most enjoyable meals of the year for many of us.
“However you choose to cook it, and whoever ends up taking on the mantle – it wouldn’t be quite the same without these festive favourites.”
Stuffing, Yorkshire puddings and roast parsnips came in sixth, seventh and eighth respectively, while carrots and cranberry sauce completed the top 10.
It also emerged 38 percent rate the Christmas dinner as their favourite dish of the year.
But 30 percent dislike how long it takes to cook, with one in five wishing it took under an hour to create.
And more than a quarter said they cook extra of their preferred part of the dish so they could have a bigger helping.
Currently, Britons estimate whoever is in the kitchen will spend an average of three hours putting the meal together.
Yet, 53 percent actually enjoy cooking up their festive meal, according to the research via OnePoll.
It also emerged that 74 percent think sitting down for Christmas dinner is the best part of the day itself.
A spokesman from Morphy Richards, creator of the Mico range, which aims to help users cook up dishes to oven quality in the microwave, added: “Traditionally, cooking Christmas dinner can take quite a while, and our research shows Britons wish it didn’t take so long.
“Many people will spend hours in the kitchen, wishing instead that they could be enjoying quality time with their loved ones on such a special occasion.
“The Mico range offers a simple way to speed up the process by cooking elements of your meal in the microwave.”
